A thought: Given the amazing and wonderful complexity of the natural world, I prefer to use "complicated" rather than "conplex" for human predicaments. We need all the natural complexity we can get, and what the Cahokians walked away from was not complexity (they actually walked toward that!), it was the complications necessitated by a hierarchical, reductionist view of the world.

Also, all who enjoyed reading this should read J Scott's Against the Grain. Cahokia is not the only incipient city-state people walked away from.
