I suspect the "shared values" part is impossible to do without, even if the other elements are there.

So here’s my take on that. Yes, for your group you shelter with. But for natural disasters and community defense from cartels or others, you can work with other groups, particularly if you at least have created some rules for operations. I also believe in doing so, you would find more people with shared values. Alliances are formed all the time between sparring factions when they have a common enemy. Just my 2 cents!

Definitely agreed. I meant for the core group but didn't make that clear.

I also think that, yes, a lot of what can feel like sharp differences can melt away under conditions of stress, because some of them are actually superficial, being manufactured by media, etc.

All that being said, there are some deal breakers that could make long-term cooperation very challenging. Like, after the flood waters have gone down, so to speak, but there's still work to do.

I will definitely be reflecting on this essay.
